London Looking for advice on best places to stay, nothing too expensive Also any tips for making the best of my time there which will only be a weekend. Not really bothered about clubbing.
Re: London I strongley advise you do go clubbing - friday night keb darge @ madam jo jo's deep funk and northern soul... best night in the country.
Sounds intersting but If I were to go clubbing it would most likely be Fabric. Quite fancy going to a show on the Sat - Les Miserables. Where is the best area to stay Joe for getting around?
if you want to be near the show's then you want to be on or near the strand. i'm going down on saturday for my mothers birthday, we're off to see 'stones in their pockets.' the critics have been loving this so i'm looking forward to something a bit different from the mainstream shows. if you want to be fairly central but not outrageous in price you can't go wrong with russel square, there is a post house & a holiday inn within a stones throw of the tube, which itself is only a a couple of stops from the leciester square, oxford street etc. if you would rather be in a quieter, smaller hotel then their are loads and loads of privately owned ones in south kensington which is only about 10 mins walk from hyde park. search on the internet, for cheap london hotels there are hundreds of sites offering deals these days.
Cheers. I'll have a look. I've not been to a big show since I was younger. Quite fancy doing something different.
Re: London Covent garden is a good place to just walk around, watch the people - have a coffee etc. Old Bond street is a laugh aswell with all the fuck off expensive designer shops... Soho is good for bars and places to sit and chill out - theres also some good japanese ramen bars there to grab some good food Clubbing wise.... saturday nights are usually good at turnmills, or failing that the cross... or the other thousand or so clubs/nights Golden rule - take fuckloads of cash!
oh if you can go on the millenium eye, the view from the top is nothing short of breathtaking. plus avoid shopping on oxford / regent street, goto covent garden the single best selection of shops in the whole world imo.
I'd strongley advise against the eye theres better things to do in london than spend hours queing for a view.... The dali exhibition is a stones throw from the eye go see that oinstead The globes well good if your after a bit of culutre 2... although personally I'd go see jerry springer the opera Les Miserables is good, family is going to see phantom of the opera on staurday I think. Hotels - it doesn't matter where you stay public transport is great in london underground and late buses will get you everywhere - taxi's will have ur eyes out though. Quality Hotel in Paddington is a good mid priced hotel... getting a room may be hard though Take chris's advice on shopping, although a trip to camden town would be advised too.
Theres a good cheap B&B i stay at in Victoria - single rooms are £35 a night, english breakfast in the morning. The toilet/shower facilites are shared for that price but they're clean and good spec. £45 gets you a room with en-suite. www.brindlehousehotel.co.uk It's 5 minutes walk from Victoria Station so you got a choice of bus or tube to get around London. Joe is right about the cabs tho.. illegal minicab drivers will skin your teeth when it comes to the fare.. best thing to do is take a 5 minute walk away from the main centres of clubs/pubs.. theres uaually loads of hackney carriages who'll charge you a fair price. Wish i'd known that in the first place i would have saved meself the trouble of battling for a hacney cab in Picadilly! Took a 5 minute walk out toward Buckingham Palace and flagged down a hackney almost instantly,
we booked a few weeks before we went down, non for queing. imo the view from the top rivals that from the top of the eiffell tower. i got an amazing 360% panoramic shot from the top with my digi camera. also there is always the tate modern to have a wander round if you feel the need for some highbrow couture! definately the better out of the two tate galleries.
