Which of you lazy student types are going on strike then?

Universities are bracing themselves for a week of chaos on campus as students protesting against top-up fees prepared to combine in a pincer movement with lecturers striking over pay.

More than 20 universities could be shut down when undergraduates stand on picket lines with lecturers belonging to the Association of University Teachers, claimed the National Union of Students.

The unions will target Welsh universities on Monday, English ones on Tuesday and those in Scotland and Northern Ireland on Thursday and Friday respectively, with a UK-wide "day of action" taking place on Wednesday.

They said there was a "clear link" between student fees and staff pay "modernisation".

Both were leading to the "marketisation" of higher education, the unions warned.

NUS president Mandy Telford predicted that "at least" 20 universities including Warwick and Goldsmith's College, part of the University of London, would be unable to function that day.

Others, including Cardiff and Aberdeen, could also be forced to close during the disruption, she claimed.

The Government's controversial Higher Education Bill, which will give universities the power to charge fees of up to £3,000 from 2006, is currently going through Parliament.

It just cleared its first Commons hurdle at the end of January, when Tony Blair's majority was slashed to just five votes in the biggest rebellion against a piece of Government legislation since Labour came to power in 1997.

Ms Telford said: "What we want to do with this week of action is to keep this issue at the top of the agenda and take it out to a wider audience, and get members of the public more aware of the issues. And, most importantly, we are keeping the pressure up on MPs."

Almost all of us end up in the same boat anyway... nearly 20 grands worth of debt for me when I graduate... so all that tax dodging, government sponging malarky can be left at the door! :D

to be fair, students aren't tax scrounging bastards. any tax which they dont pay while at university they'll more than make up for should they reach the higher earning thresh hold of £30k and have to pay 30% income tax as opposed to 22% like everyoe else..
