The Quality of Life in Britain Today

    Nicked from another board :

The quality of life in Britain today is truely dreadful. The cost of living is extortionate, you get ripped off when buying a house, a car, a drink in a pub, a meal in a restaurant. Holidays in Britain are expensive, hotel accommodation is extortionate. There is rising direct taxes, stealth taxes, more red tape and bureaucracy, high house prices, property speculation, social exclusion, Government sleaze and corruption, high levels of consumer debt, media bias and lies and distortion of the facts, the destruction of Britain's manufacturing base, a demented consumer boom, poor public services, crumbling infrastructure, an unstable boom and bust economy, violence and crime, city fraud and corruption, police brutality and victimization, poor job prospects, the North-South divide, high levels of polution, traffic noise, vehicle exhaust fumes, too much traffic and poor driving, car rage, shopping trolley rage, high cost of fuel, bad weather, too many home improvement and property programmes on TV, vulgarity and the regular use of expletives, breakdown in social order, lack of respect for others, greed, property obsession, people constantly talking about house prices, urban decay, too many massage parlours and fast food shops, poor schools and education, lack of opportunity, the awful buildings by Norman Foster, terrible art by Damien Hurst and Tracy Emin, dreadful people like Jeremy Clarkson, Gordon Ramsey, Anne Spackman and Anatole Kaletsky. Can things get any worse? Is it any wonder that people have just had enough and emmigrate.

    Made me smile anyhow :D

Like it's very different anywhere else, in the Western world anyway. And elsewhere, the rich/poor divide is greater.

    Oh what a happy thought.

I was just going 2 say that. A lot of it is to do with money aswell, lack of it, which nobody can really change can they? It seems everything is about money now.
I mean fair enough, Britain is quite shit at times, but like spence sed we do have it quite easy i suppose!

I'm sick of gettin ripped off over everything, plus tax, tax and more bloody tax!

Thing is...is it better or worse in other countries...?

Expect Gordon Bastard Brown to introduce a "selling house tax" sometime after the next election - as well as already payin Stamp Duty on a house he will also coin off around 40% of the profit you make from selling on:rolleyes:

The excuse will be to help stabolise house prices therefore stabolising interest rates therefore making entry to Europe easier!

I feel the Pain Vandenburg

I was working out yesterday the proportion of money i actually have a choice in giving away, versus the amount that the government gets from me.

From the word go i lose 40% from income tax and national insurance, then another 5% in council tax, then out of whats left - the government gets at least 17.5% of that from VAT alone - thats not even taking into account going out and the duty paid on stuff like booze...

thats literally HALF of everything i earn goes into the governments hands... and even after that - im paying over the odd's for all the things quoted above.

Seriously, we are poorer now than people in similar situations 10-20 years ago... it sucks.

    TAX

I hate the fact that when you do over time at work you hardly see any of what you have earned due to the amount of tax taken off you... even if you work double time etc

That is down to you thinking: 15 hours overtime @ dbl time = X

    When you should think: 15 hours overtime @ dbl time = X - Y

Although a disgrace, that's nothing compared to what goes on in other countries though!

I'm still yet to visit a country I would call better than Britain! So that's USA - Australia - France - Spain - Greece - Cyprus - Sri Lanka - & other little shitty ones. Australia is a far more beautiful country, but it's under regulated and it's law is still in it's beginnings.

Better to be over regulated than under!

    This wont happen.

The upper class and every MP own vast amounts of property and thats where the REAL WEALTH is. There is no way they would allow such a tax.

A Buy to Let tax is much more likely IMO.
