Broadband providers Sorry to post one of these threads up again, but i need your opinions and advice. I am living in a house with 5 other mates (so 6 of us in total) and we need GOOD reliable, high speed bradband. Having looked at whats on offer I have narrowed my choices down to these two: 1.) Pipex 1 mbit broadband, with unlimited bandwidth for £35 a month. 2.) Telewest blueyonder 1.5 mbit (or we might got for the 3mbit) broadband for £37 a month. However, the telewest site does not mention whether their packages have any usage limits, and ideally it would need to be unlimited because we are gonna be downloading/uploading loads. Also the telewest package is on offer at the moment so we would get two months for free and a twenty pound discount for buying online, which would make it just as cheap as pipex. Anyone recommend blueyonder over pipex? I'm also gonne need some help later on cos im gonna have to set up a wi-fi network which is gonna be a biach.
Sounds like u've got a good deal on the blueyonder 3mb there... I have the 750kbs with them (with no download/upload limit) which is fast enough for me to be honest. Get tunes in less a than a min n movies sometimes in half a day so i'd imagine 3mb would be shit hot :fuming:
thanks for the feedback lads, the dude from telewest is coming round today so im gonna try and blag more discount..... but I know for a fact my 5 other flatmates wouldn't come near using a 3mbit line's full potential.....mwahahahaha
Re: Re: Broadband providers hehehe give it 2 weeks, they'll be a "i'm starting a wireless network in my house - what do i need?" then 2 weeks after that "i can't seem to get my wireless network.." no offence mate
wireless networks = wrong mine works now but it's never great. suppose if i hadnt been a double cheap bastard n bought the cheapest wireless adsl modem/router i could, then maybe the situation would be better, but mleh... im thinkin i might buy one of the new US robotics 802.11g modem/routers... (apparently very good) if that dont have a strong signal, than nothin will.
I hear ya juski, but i dotn really have any alternatives. Our house is pretty big (6 bedrooms) spread over 3 levels, and having that much wire trailing all over the place is gonna be hard to manage. Seeing that the router would have to be in the middle floor, and we need one connection downstairs, three in the middle floor, and two upstairs.... Anyway, wouldnt the cost of rj45 cable alone be more than a wireless router and 6 wireless cards?
ok lads, we ended up buying a 1.5 megabit connection in the end, and as most of my housemates want wireless, i think im gonna have to go ahead with it. Seeing that most folk on here arent the most avid supporters of wireless.....i'd still like to know your opinions on wireless kit and encryption etc. Im currently looking at routers, I'm not opposed to spending a bit more cash on a router if its gonna provide me with better reliability. So for a 1.5 megabit connection that is gonna be shared between 6, with a max of probably about 4 ppl using it at any one time..... what sorta speed router should i be looking at? 54mbps seems to be middle of the road sort of territory but im not entirely sure what i need. Also as juski said 128 bit WEP isnt enuff.... there are routers that offer 256 bit WEP and WPA security........ security is essential because I dont want some twat across the road leeching my bandwidth.
When I lived on a mini student housing estate, we connected approx 40 pc's in 20-odd houses onto a network. We were out at 3am every night for a coupla weeks, CCTV turned off and shovel in hand, digging up the grass and paving stones to lay all the cabling, and drilling holes in unnoticeable places in the houses themselves to hide the cables. A little bit of effort and you can have a better network And it's canny easy to blag cable if you know any IT bods, I've got a huge suitcase full of it...
I like pissing about with networks, and I'm like a little squirrel gathering cables, switches, hubs, printer servers, etc for the winter
Slightly disturbing mike. Anyway, do I need 54mbps or will 11 suffice for a home network? basically its the difference between 802.11b and 802.11g b is 11mbps and g is 54mbps, and theres a notable price difference too.
Cheers juski, ive decided what kit im getting now: Linksys WAP54G Wireless-G Access Point three of these: Linksys WPC54G Wireless-G Notebook Adapter Thwo of these: Linksys WMP54G Wireless-G PCI Adapter And the last pc is gonna be hardwired into the router. Another question.....when telewest come and install the cable modem and all of that, can the modem plug straight into the router, or must it go through a PC first? If we wanted to keep the network running all the time would we have to keep this "base" pc on all the time?
the router and the modem are linked. you will figure it out. You dont have to keep the 'base' computer on. You activate port forwarding, and you can then turn it off. We have belkin stuff, works really well.
