peeps who i talk to say trance is on its way out, i hope not cos i much prefer it to prog and house anything like that, i think trance is the heart and sole of dance music, and should stay as long as it can. No other type of dance music has the emotion and uplifting feeling of trance, i think it will last for at least another 5 years, mind it could all end up going back to ACEEEEDDDD house

    Evolution...

Music evolves with technology, trend, time and location to name but a few.

Since the dawn of time, man has sought to expand his consciousness, or get out of his head, in one form or another. From licking frogs, to beating drums, to hallucinogenic plants, we seek to induce altered states and experience realities outside the boundaries of our normal perception.

Trance music is another conduit for this journey, albeit aided by class A's, but who ever heard of some one being in a state of garage, or house or techno? No, they were in a state of trance. That rhythmic pattern will be prevalent in music for as long as people choose to dance and experiment.

It would be very boring without trance.

    Lee :)

It was well cool that year probably 97 and 98 were better, but thought it was gradually fizzling out in 99 and then picking up late last year

Trance will NEVER die, it just keeps evolving.

Some of you might not realise this, but trance has actually been around for 10 years, mainly starting off as more chill-out stuff.
It only really came to the fore in 98/99, and it will stay with us for a long time to come, but not necessarily in the form that you know it now!

Trance was around for a decade before it became the latest thing. It'll evolve like othere genre's until it gets to a point where people don't recognise it as Trance and go call it something else, it'll never carck it.

As for being the heart and soul, soz mate but that accolade is well and truly sown up by House and proper Techno

    How amusing...

Trance, or derivative styles, have been around for a lot longer than 'funky house' and 'Hard Dance'

Check out what they were doing at the Cabaret Voltaire, in Zurich in 1916; the members of that club were experimenting with natural frequencies and noise generators.

When Theremin, the Russian electronics genius, invented the first synth, he didn’t bash out a soulful house track, he based his work on precise mathematical frequency relationships. The arrangements were hypnotic and mirrored sounds from nature.

I can see why many get confused about the origins of house and trance, but you only have to look at the 1960's, with Floyd and Karl Heinz Stockhausen, they were pioneering 'futuristic' techniques that eventually evolved into the precepts of trance. The explosion of the home computer played a massive role in this change.

If you do a little research, you will see that the disco vibe from the 70's, rich with HI-NRG from the gay scene, also played an important role in the formation of trance, as we know it.

The German masters of electronica, Kraftwerk, were pivotal players in this gradually evolution. The whole mesh of dance music has been formed like an intricate jigsaw, with cultures, styles, musicians, DJ's and trends contributing to the overall picture.

In reality, several sounds and styles developed in parallel phases around the world, it is wrong to say one style is the 'heart and soul' of music, apart from being egotistical, it shows a complete lack of appreciation for actual musical history. Every style has its merits and flaws.

An earlier posting was correct, trance will no doubt morph into another sub genre, or have a retro fit, music always follows a huge circle, it's a fact.

I spent 1991-1999 'getting out more', more than your average Joe I might add. ;)

Clubbing is wicked, the socialising and music, but hey, those homework assignments will not write themselves.

Once I get this production HND out of the way, it will be a whole new ball game.

    Tee hee!
