    John Askew interview - 4clubbers feb '07.

An interview with Askew for anyone that fancies a read....

Some timeless quotes as per, i think my fav being:

    18) How can you best describe your feeling of playing to thousands of people and feeding of their energy due in the very peak of your set at a massive event like say one of the festivals ?

Askew: Like realising you’ve won the lottery at the exact same moment that you are coming up on pills and being sucked off. It’s quite lovely.

    4) In your teens you used to be well into playing guitars, but then you traded that in for a set of decks once you attended your first rave in Cornwall. How can you describe that experience and what was it about it that gave you so much inspiration?

Looking back, if I’m totally honest I think a lot of it was initially down to strong drugs. I had been so used to going out to rock clubs/pubs/venues where it was the norm for there to be drunken fighting and general aggressive vibes, so when I attended this rave you mentioned and took ecstasy for the first time I saw the flip side to that coin. I think in the early stages it was this vibe that drew me to the scene. More so than the music. I was more interested in sitting in dark corners talking shit with random people than dancing, but then I spent a night sat in the dj booth watching this guy play – I think it might have been Easygroove or someone like that. It was then that I realised the power of the music and more importantly how creative a dj could be by selecting and blending different sounds to make different moods on the dancefloor. From that moment on, I knew I wanted to make this music and play it in clubs.
