    Opinions on "cheating"?

Following on from the judge jules thread, apparently eddie halliwell pre BPM's all his tunes before sets so doesn't have to beatmatch! With the introduction of ableton and other software and with the majority of big dj's being producers i don't find this suprising like, and tbf aslong as it sounds good in the club then it shouldn't really matter, they have still got get EQ's etc spot on, thoughts?

DJing with Ableton using other peoples tunes is a bit offside like. Your not really doing anything apart from standing there. Fair enough if your using the program to cut tracks up, or layer your own grooves on other tracks but straight mixing with other peoples stuff isnt very creative.

You dont even have to EQ it live if you dont want. It can all be pre-automated.

Now ableton used in conjunction with traditional set ups (tunrtables and CDJs) can lead to some very creative techniques

I think with Eddie & the Judge they've both round long enough to have proved their worth on both Vinyl & CD's. All the old Clubbers Guide CD's were all Vinyl & the most poignant of all - Eddies original BOSH CD was also all Vinyl, so id never for 1 minute doubt hat these guys cant mix.

I know a lot of tracks I buy are already at set BPM's so I dont need to beat match them, take for instance all the Discover tracks (which Eddie is playing a lot more of these days) you'll find that no matter who the artist they'll all be the same BPM when you bang them in the CDJ.

The whole cheating thing has been going on for years, no mater what you do or how you do it, for me I enjoy mixing, if I was to edit all my tracks it would take the fun out of everything, but suppose if you go see a DJ who has edited all his/her tracks but doing a lot more other than mixing then I guess they've justified doing it.

theres arguments both ways but a wouldnt be very impressed if a knew a dj was up at the front gettin his wedge to stand about an do very little. whats the point in the dj being there? he could just send in his cd if thats the case.

jst takes the heart out of it imo, us plebs pay for a show

a know gib prefabs all his mixes like, proper offside

If it is true about eddie, thats what i can't understand, surely when you take the enjoyment out of it then its not worth pursuing it?Surely thats the whole point in the first place, to get amongst it at the business end of things, instead of fuckin about with pre planned, pre programmed and pre gutter sets.

I approve of ableton when it's used properly (to cut songs up, remixing on the fly etc). A bit like how deadmau5 uses it (below)

    [yt]XjRKLHUqYAE[/yt]

We have DJs up consett way who have taken to using laptops so they don't have to mix - unsurprisingly they just stand there like twats all night, and don't seem to get much of a reaction from the crowd.

If you want an examply of a really lazy DJ, look at Dave Kelly (galaxy). When I used to be a light jockey, he paid a visit to our place and decided to use the automix feature on our CD decks - never mixed a thing because he couldn't be arsed.

(He did come a cropper a month or so later when the CD decks fucked up - apparently he can't mix with vinyl either  )

As for halliwell pre-bpming his tracks, I've got all my cuepoints and loops saved within my denon player for each CD, so I can shove it in and the player automatically recognises the entry points. Granted, I still have to mix, but what's wrong with having everything prepared?

The mixer reads the tempo from the CDJs, converts it to a midi signal and syncs Ableton to that tempo.

Ableton is a more of a sequencer/DAW whereas I guess Traktor could be described as turntable emulation?

I dont like Traktor at all but some love it

I was checking traktor when Lister had it on the other week , I reckon it's pretty amazing, it just allows you to use vinyl to control your mp3s don;t think it does any beatmatching or owt like that seeing as you still use the decks to pitch stuff,
basically means you can take your entire music collection with you to every gig and still have the feel of mixing with vinyl, it's a winner if I had £1500 to get a decent macbook and a copy of it I'd do it

as for the likes of jules etc using bpm locked cds I'm sure there was talk morillo used to do this, to be honest who gives a toss, they're "BIG NAME" surperstar djs who every Tom dick and harry goes to see
the pressuer on them to be spot on is pretty high so why not, the consequencces of them having an off night due to bad mixing would be pretty bad PR for them so I say why not, has no effect on me or 90% of people really into dance music anyways and about 70% of the people who go to see them aren't arsed at all about what/how they're mixing the records

Have you tried it with cdj's? Doing it with vinyl is quite difficult as theres constant fluctuations in the tempo.

I havent used a 3D but Udberg had one and sold it pretty much straight away.

If you want to sync Ableton/Traktor with cdjs/vinyl then just get one of these

    http://www.redsound.com/products/soundbitemicro

you can pick them up on Ebay for £50

I found the fluctuations in tempo normally arise during the breakdowns or in parts of the track where's there's little or no beat.

For some reason, when I've recorded mixes in it and played them back, all the effects I've added on the fly are missing. Why's this??

Do you mean the effects you have set up in ableton?

Try recording direct from your mixer instead of recording internally.
