    Shearer denies Owen quit rumours

Shearer and Owen played together for club and country
Newcastle manager Alan Shearer has labelled reports on Friday stating striker Michael Owen will retire at the end of the season as "ludicrous".

The 29-year-old has not scored since 10 January and was recently substituted against Middlesbrough with score at 1-1 before Newcastle ran out 3-1 winners.

"He doesn't need it, doesn't deserve it," said Shearer.

"The stories out are totally ludicrous and untrue as far as he's concerned, and he has laughed them off."

Temporary manager Shearer, whose team moved out of the bottom three last Monday with victory over Boro, has backed his former England and Newcastle team-mate to start finding the net again.

    606: DEBATE
Would you have Owen in the starting XI?
"Go out and score goals - the player has always got the last opportunity to go out and do the business on the football pitch," he added, ahead of Saturday's game against Fulham.

"He always has the chance to have the last laugh. My mind will never change with Michael Owen - if you give him chances, eventually he will score goals, I have no doubt about that."

Owen is out of contract at St James' Park at the end of the season and Shearer did not provide any clues to whether the former Liverpool and Real Madrid player would sign a new deal with the Magpies.

Shearer added: "I am 100% certain he will have a future in the Premier League.

"But as to where that will be, here or elsewhere, that's for a discussion at the end of the season."

i really hope he goes at the end of the season like, he's useless. the amount of money we'll lose/have lost will be a bitter pill but i'd much rather spend his wages on somebody that can score goals. owen and smith to go at the end of the season, hopefully anyway.

I've grew to hate Michael Owen as a footballer.

What is it with various pundits & Shearer constantly putting him on this pedestal? on his day & when fit, theres no disputing he's one of the best in the Premiership, but when was the last time he was remotely like that? Liverpool maybe?

I know we haven't got the best service providers for him but he's been non existant for us this season, his track record with the toon has been terrible. When we played Boro & he was being brought off the commentator couldn't believe it, claimed it was Shearers 1st BIG mistake in Management...

Maybe not as it now seems...

Id love for a team like Villa (for example) to come in for him, I honestly couldn't see Shearer letting him go if we say up tho.

eve when you could tell he blatently didnt want to be here the past few season he still had that "give him half a chance and he will score" factor that meant you would be a fool to leave him out of the XI - now he hasnt even got that, against Portsmouth he missed two massive chances and he doesnt even look interested now. he'll get his move in the summer to somehwere like Villa or Everton, maybe even spurs, but i think that will be the end of him and he'll either go north of the border or to the MLS after that
