    Scandisk being annoying

OK, firstly this isn't for me or my computer...it's my Dad's computer which is my (very) old one! In one word I would describe it as "crap". But my Dad doesn't use it for much, so it's fine for him.

Anywho, it IS annoying for me that I always have to fix things for him, and whenever you start the computer up, it runs scandisk before it loads all the Start Menu and all the desktop items and all that stuff. And I don't like that, and I want to stop it doing that!!

So I've done the "simpleton" things of seeing if it was in the "Startup" area of the start menu (it wasn't) and if there were options in Scandisk to stop it from running when you boot the computer up (there aren't).

So I'm sure one of you out there knows which file (probably somewhere in the C:\Windows directory) I can edit to stop the bastard happening. Someone? Help? Please? Screech?

    Cheers in advance :)

it must be '98 - if it keeps running scandisk - it means it THINKS it never shut down properly last time - OR 1 og the drives never shutdown.

try shutting it down a few times but let it power itself off rather than using the button...

yep MOS is probs right about the shutdown thing, there was a known fault with 98 shutting down, you could get a patch off the updates for it

One of the updates was supposed to fix it but it would still hang at the "Windows is shutting down" screen, but it doesn't make a blind bit of difference if you turn it off then anyways.

@ dobbs: go to start-->run, type "msconfig" without the quotes, and select the BOOT.INI tab, I'm sure there's an option along the lines of /CHKDSK or /SCANDISK or summinck in there (I can't look now to check), make sure it's unchecked.

If that's not the problem then try this: press ctrl+alt+delete and stop every running process except "explorer" and "systray", go to start-->programs-->accessories-->system tools-->scandisk, and do a thorough scan of your disk (will take ages), as you may have some bad sectors on your drive that the normal scan doesn't easily detect
