    Stop comparing Promise to Crasher!

There's a theme which seems to run through a lot of the posts at the moment which I think is doing Promise a real dis-service. A lot of people refer to the club as if it's some kind of mini-gods kitchen or crasher in waiting, which is shite. Fair enough, initially the comparisons etc. could be seen as flattering but ultimately it makes it look as if you're are putting Promise in the shadows of other clubs.

Promise are pushing forward to create something which is unique to itself - the only true way to survive in clubland - at a time when the so-called super clubs are falling on their arses. Big has never meant better and now that everyone's seen through the whole spectacle of the big name DJ at the big club with the big marketing strategy, mix cd, t-shirt, the smaller more intimate clubs are finding that their trade is increasing.

And why this constant hope of Promise 'doing a crasher' or an all-nighter at the arena? The big events are all flashy lights and big sounds but 9 times out of 10 unsatisfying. I think a lot of the younger clubbers coming throught the ranks are getting wowed by the whole big spectacle of large events and bypassing much of what makes clubbing special, and gives it a culture. I'd be amazed if events like those at the arena could create such a tight community of people in the same was as the foundation.

As a regular for many years to Shindig up here and to Back to Basics in Leeds I've seen at first hand how smaller clubs can concentrate on fine tuning. Making the whole picture all the more detailed to make the whole experience that extra bit special and now I really see that happening with Promise.

As was mentioned in an older post, you've seen a lot of different things come and go in the club on a Friday - it's all down to Promise wanting to make the party work for you week in week out

Looking back, as good as regular excursions to Cream and Gatecrasher were, my fondest memories are always of the smaller spaces and like-minded crowds like those at Shindig, Basics, oh and The Bomb in Nottingham :)

Promise will essentially always be what you want it to be, maybe sometimes you don't always realise what that is at what it would mean.

anyway now that I sound like the grandad of House I'm gonna get back to re-catalogueing my collection of Disco rarities
    :D

Totally agree with you! And to be honest, I don't rate the big arena events much, the best nights of my life have been in clubs.

Promise would be shit if it ever did the arena. Did ne1 go to vivid at the arena? I went with Phily and before it got to messy we counted at least 30 'toon' shirts. Promise doesn't need that class of beer boy!

We've got foundation and they've got Ikon, I for one think it should stay that way!

Got too big? Stopped giving a fuck what the clubbers want? Try to get as much money from club land as possible? Released to much shitty merchandise?

Don't get me wrong, still like the place but it seems to be deteriorating!!!

god me can see why your a journalist n i mean that in the nicest of ways your dead good when it comes to writing things arent u??!!! (i'm not sure if that made complete sense but i hope u know what i mean!!!)
anyways on to the topic of the promise-crasher comparisons, everyones entitled to their opinions, but me really likes promise the way that it is i think the fact that theres not a nationwide media hype surrounding it and that there isnt people travelling from all around the country to come here makes it special, one of the things i love about promise the most is that its like our own iccle place, we get class dj's, we have a mint mint crowd and we have our little close knit community which i think is sooo important in terms of the club. im not sure whether this is making much sense i know what im trying to say but im findin it canny hard to put my point across in understandable terms!! im not saying that i dont want everyone to get to know about it cos pormise deserves ultimate amounts of praise and recognition but im sure that crasher started of pretty much the same way as promise did and look at the way its turned out.....sorry if all that never made much sense but basically everyone seems to love promise the way that things are at the moment i havent heard anyone say a bad word about it ever lately (apart from the prices in teh sweetie shop ha ha!!) so i think that it would be nice if things just stayed the way that they are but thats just my opinion im sure some of yas mite disagree....xxxx

and another thing! I really don't understand Crasher's move to bigger, one-offs. Big events are OK to add a little flavour and boost the club's and the DJ's profiles, but with it you loose any sense of community, something that Gatecrasher became famed for and which made it so special for many regulars there. How many people on here alone have complained about an overwhelming abundence of beer boys and twats in general at large events. I fear Crasher's 'time' has gone for good..... Long live Promise.

Its because they make the dosh from albums, big arena events and the SSSS

i use to be am a part owner of the Newcastle Jesters (ice hockey team) and they played out of the arena at a cost of £5000 a match

I know the arena rents out for £2000 for none ice events, so GK must have made a bit of dosh.

I know the NEC is not much more expensive so 15,000 people would have made a little packet

oooooo dear that is a lot like isnt it im presuming we're on about mr oakenfold here?? he is an absolute god but it just seems silly that they get that amount of money, the same with footballers i know im gonna be sounding like someones mam n dad here but that is more than some people get in a year isnt it it makes me a little bit angry sometimes. i suppose he did donate his fees to charity for world dj day which was dead nice of him n so did judge jules too and a lot of other dj's but it still seems like such a lot of money for just a few hours......... xxxx
