    Trying To Install Vista

Hi, I hope you or another techy geek can help me.

The problem WE have, is my PC got a virus, I then borrowed someone else's Windows XP to get my machine back up & running, I used the same product key that had worked find for me but for some reason it could now not get through Windows Activation. So I though screw this lets upgrade to Vista.

    Are you still with me?

So I got a copy of Vista & as my machine is a 64 bit machine I got the 64 bit home premium, when I put the software in to load it I get "Setup cant not run on this version of Operating System. To install Windows please try booting from the install media". I have went into the setup & changed the 1st & 2nd boot option to CD & have "pressed any key to boot from CD" but alas it just loads up Windows XP.

    Once again please help me..

To be honest if your going to go with vista your better off sticking with the 32 bit version for now like , still shit loads of problems with compatibility on the 64 bit version.

If your hard drive is sata you may need to install sata drivers before doing the vista installation so that it recognises the drive !!

    Chees Juski/Fidds

JUSKI - FDISK - is that just click run type in FDISK? Or should go to my computer & right click on my C:drive & the format

Fidds - Please post a link to these SATA drives I may need.

Fella's I now have the 64-Bit software as me being a run of the mill user thought me having a 64-bit machine that would be the best thing to get.

Any more advice during this install process would be more than welcome:)

    Fidds,

Do I find this info in device manager? If so then what am I looking for?

Got to shoot to work now but I will be back

aye, Stick with 32bit OS's, just install the 64 driver once windows is on.

    here's the problem bit :

"pressed any key to boot from CD" but alas it just loads up Windows XP

it's not booting to it, that vista disk might have a problem. Yeah, get the ultimate boot CD and flatten the HD so there's nothing on it at all - no partitions - nothing. Better than that, crack the PC open, find the MAKE of the hard disk - the companies make 'low level format' utilities for their hard drives. try that.

infact, here's some low level format utils to start you off, for Seagate, Maxtor, Western Digital and Fujitsu. Run the exe and it'll create some boot disks for you - You'll need some floppies

By the way, the activation thing in XP - there's loads of work arounds for it!

How would you use these if you didnt have a floppy drive ?

they're bootable floppy images - IN THEORY you can mod a USB stick and put the stuff on there - if u know what you're doing.

Failing that - just copy all the files to a bootable USB stick then try find the EXE in dos and run it

Not true at all mate, i've not had a single problem with my 64bit machine

I'd be rather surprised if you needed Sata drivers, I don't see what that's going to achieve, it's obviously already recognized by the bios and by Windows so very unlikely to be the problem. In fact i'll stick my neck out and say it's not your problem. This wouldn't stop you booting from a CD/DVD anyway

Before you flatten your hard drive (unless you really want to), try some other bootable CD/DVD and see what happens

XP needs SATA drivers when installing it, you press 'F6' at the start of the install - not sure what Vista's like.... probably DONT need them for that.

    it's probably stuffed the partitions.

Also, from within XP, stick the CD in and see what happens

Some of the early pre release versions of vista required you to install sata drivers before you could install it m8 !!

Lol loads of buisiness's are pulling 32 bit vista off their pc's nevermind the 64 bit version and downgrading back to xp pro !

MOS/ChirsUk - Cheers for your time.

Chris - I am not that bothered about wiping this baby down as I was wiped out a few weeks ago. Just tell me the best way to format & kick the install in .

    :)

That may just be your problem! Indeed, this is what most of this hear-say about "64 bit having huge driver issues" is based on. We're on SP1 now..not Beta 1!

With regard to business...well I can see why. It needs good hardware to run properly and XP is still the way forward in the office imo

i hate vista, its just... different

when i eventually get my laptop i'm sticking on XP as a second OS just in case i get too irratated.

and i dont really understand all this 32/64 bit business either.

i'm sure with a mass torrent of service packs and auto updates it'll be amazing within 2 years, but then they'll blates bring something else out. fucking microsoft!
