Want to build a CHEAP pc I want another PC to act as a gateway for my computers at home. I already have a spare hard drive, and I don't imagine I will need loads of memory or an uber fast processor....I want it exclusively as a gateway/firewall. Wheres good for cheap but decent kit? I would need a motherboard with processor already fitted preferably.. ta
Re: Want to build a CHEAP pc Why not just buy a router? If you want a pc for this task id recommend about a p2 400mhz with 128mb of ram running win2k and winroute (firewall connection sharing software). You will need a 4 gig hard disk for os + apps. Case whise you can pickup something for £30 that will be fine, you don't need a disk drive or cdrom (take the cdrom out of yr desktop to install windows). Don't bother with a monitor/keyboard/mouse for it, just use a remote app such as vnc to control it from yr desktop.
Re: Want to build a CHEAP pc if you ONLY wanna use this machine as an inet gateway mate then. get anything upwards of a 386, 8mb ram. make sure u have a network card in it and a floppy drive. then u can get a tiny linux distribution which runs off a floppy disk........will act as a router/firewall - be suprt stable, super secure and do exactly what u need. no point spending money on summit high spec when this is all u need u can pickup a pc to run this for about £50. if u wanna go the windows route tho - will cost a bit more money - but what rob says is spot on advice.
/strokes chin. I would need a router that is suitable for ADSL. Whats availble for reasonably little money?
