I can strongly recommend kiss dvd players. Mine plays divx/xvid movies over my network from files stored on my pc.

I think is works the same as converting mp3's to wavs, the quality of the wav doesn't get any better than the original mp3 but the file size is a lot bigger.

Its just about different modes of compression.. different codecs use different compression techniques.

Majority of the Divx\Xvids I have seen are usually sourced from dvds, therefore they are ripped and converted using said compression.

    However..

Some of the newer releases on the scene are converted into 6 different compressions\formats -

    VCD
    SVCD
    KVCD
    DVD-R

    Divx
    Xvid

The top 4 can generally be used in dvd players..
The bottom 2 are primarly used on a computer, however as mentionned they can be viewed on some modern day dvd players.

No video.. regardless of the compression technique used.. can be inproved in a per pixel way. Brightness and contrast etc can be adjusted and new audio streams can be attached but fundamentally the video will be the same as the source it originated from.

Its all about the situation and the users personal preference..

if you're up for it, you can build your own out of an old pc - works like a sky plus box. Juski and myself have already done it. Works just like Windows XP Media Centre but better, and you can rip all of your dvds/cds to hard disks using divx/xvid/ogg/mp3

    take a look at www.mythtv.org.
