Toothache trick is an old stage hypnotist thing to rapidly hypnotise someone, basically it is done by rapidly vibrating the tooth without rmoving your finger from their face... this is so forceful it actually hurts a little... the hypnotist then exclaims "you have a toothache it hurts" ... at this point the person thinks he's been hypnotised so when the hypnotist tells the person to shut his eyes and sleep - they oblige.

this was taken straight from the stage hypnotists encyclopedia before anyone screams poppycosh :D

I think the blurb advertising his book sums up the techniques Derren uses:

Derren Brown, the most radical and original new thinker in the world of mentalism, will take you from excellent close-up magic to the most powerful mind-reading you have ever seen. With flamboyant wit, Derren explains the secrets and techniques that he uses to amaze the experts, drawing from hypnotic skills and breathtaking psychological artistry. This is brand new mindreading without compromise; no use of billets, envelopes or nailwriters will be found within these pages. This is a book for the serious thinker who would normally disregard 99% of a magic book's contents.

    profile

Brown's stunt just made the ITV news.

I think that was the main thought behind this trick...... iv watched him for a good couple of years on C4 but his show was on at stupid times like midnight and not many had heard of him......... its time for his profile to be raised & this stunt has done it.

    Derren vs. The Yanks

IMO it's time for Derren to take over the US....he'd go down well over there much better than Blaine I think!

    top bloke he is...

    a news feature :
    http://uk.news.yahoo.com/031005/325/eaajm.html

the classic line being : "there would be a slight tape delay so transmission could be quickly ended if he blew his head off" that poor kid in the box would have been splattered with his brain matter. now THATS tv.

Police complaining there would be 'copycat' incidents - if some council housing estate, nova driving, radgey rude boy wants to play that game and blow his head off after 'copying what he saw on t.v." - it's one less gypo claiming the dole if u ask me.

I remember an incident where a young boy saw a magician perform the "Daggar Chest" illusion (where the magician puts a box on someone's head and sticks loads of daggars in), went home, put a cardboard box on his little sisters head and stuck a knife through.

that was an awful story... but this was on at 9pm AND you'd need a gun AND you'd only be injuring yourself.

I reckon he knew it was 1 all along. The mistake at bullet 5 and the long pause after it was probably to add to the dramatic effect. He reads much harder stuff so this was probably really easy for him. Was well impressive though.
I wonder whether russian roulette has ever been played at some coke-fuelled parties by people who think they're invincible
