its no secret that iran's leaders are against israel and what it stands for. if they had the ability they would wipe israel out.

it seems a bit heartless but i would prefer israel to go to war with iran as opposed to another US/UK coallition a couple of years down the line. it could even do bush and co a favour over the nuclear debate.

however it opens a massive can of worms, it will spread more hatred and intensify much of what is in place already. im not sure how israel can win this... it cant be easy being surrounded by people's and governments that want to see you wiped out and have tried to in the past.

the islamic nations in the middle east have a lot of catching up to do in terms of social progression and freedom, iran uses sharia law so this is unlikely to happen anytime soon so i think the middle east is going to remain in turmoil for decades to come.

if its any consolation joe, i agree with much (not all however ;)) of what you have said in this thread.

My fear is that if Israel start on Iran, and then maybe Syria, the rest of the Middle East isn't going to sit back and watch. If they're not careful this could be the end for Israel, and if it kicks off big time there is nothing anyone like the UN will be able to do.

joe out of interest, at what scale in the escalation of events will you be upping sticks and returning to the 'motherland' to stand armed side by side with your jewish brothers and sisters, ready to defend her honour?

i can't see a way out of any of this situation - it's all founded on hate and mistrust.

the arabs objected to the jews getting their 'homeland' back soon as it seemed like they were loosing out on the deal, hence the war in '48 - but what is the answer? should the palestines move out? what gives the jews more rights to the land over the arabs? who says 'x' bit of lands belongs to someone else?

aslong as syria AND iran don't all join in...

We destroyed the Arab alliance while in our infancy and since then our military force has undergone a giant growth curve... Jordan are loving the peace treaty, Pakistan are locked up in India and Iraq, Egypt have too much to lose.... Syria and Iran have always been the black sheep - who would come to their aid?

At the time when I feel I'd be needed to defend my people.

If we launched an offensive against Syria and Iran which plunged the nation into grave danger then I'd be on the first plane out there.... I don't know what use I'd be to the IDF - but I'd be more useful there than at my computer.

If they get it wrong nobody will be able to stop the assault on Israel. If they attack Iran I can't see any way the international community could say that Iran invading Israel is not justified. Massive gamble!

Are you sure enough that they can win to bet a country on it? I'd not be.

It will be too late by that point for it to really matter. All the nukes will do is kill millions of civis and turn the whole world against Israel.

    They still loose.

The above would make great questions if the events you cited took place.

The collapse of the Ottoman Empire came to symbolize the demise of Islam, for 1500 years the countries of the Middle East had been conglomerated into various different nations; there was no Jordan or Syria just the Ottoman or Abbasid Empire.

Palestine didn't exist; when it was offered to the Arabs they rejected the western proposition and opted for the region to be absorbed into Jordan... Palestinian nationalism is a very new concept.

Israel had come to represent the imperialistic nature of the democratic occident, a people that had once served as Dhimmi under the mighty Islamic empire were now being given ex-caliphate land by the very people that had crushed the Ottoman forces.

It was for these reasons that the tensions began; a humiliated people were scrabbling around trying to cling onto any dignity they could find... The Jews were seen as an easy target.

The settlers came to a barren land with ambitions of peace; there were no Zionist military plans as the conflict was never expected.... The Arabs realised this and predicted that a short, swift victory would follow… Fortunately the Jews were able to withstand these unprovoked attacks.

You talk of a land given away from under the Arabs noses, how can you give away a land if it purchased legally? How can you give away a land that never belonged to the Arabs? How can you give away the ancestral homeland of the land receivers?

The borders of Israel were drawn up at the very time the borders of the modern-day middle east were created… Palestine hasn’t existed since Roman times and it still doesn’t exist today.

Israel has always been focused on peace but the Arab world is unable to accept this, Iran is not interested in the Palestinian people - their only concern is the promotion of Islam/Iran at any cost.... Unfortunately this is usually at the expense of Palestinian or Lebanese civilians.

But that attack is going to come, for 50 years the Arab world has launched attack after attack on Israel, I would prefer if that attack came now while Iran is weak... I'd hate for Iran to attack Israel 20 years down the line.

The middle east is adjusting to the modern era - they will not remain third world countries forever.
