Fully agree with that like, prime example is alex kidd:monkey:

does that mean i'm not a "proper dance music" fan though if i like eddie halliwell?

That just about sums it up aye!

Its been going on for years though.

I dont see the fuss - i go to see a DJ because i want to hear a style that belongs to them personally and like the way they build sets. Id rather listen to a DJ that focuses on these points rather than a DJ that mixes great the normal way but falls short in the most important parts of DJing.

Sven Vath is the funniest for this, he ran out of record while hanging upside down from a balcony over the Amnesia dancefloor last time I went to Cocoon.

    Woops.

and love this review of him at The End last weekend

"he came on at 1:30 and started off fairly banging - his 4th or 5th track was Kevlar - Mongoose which really got the crowd going. He built up to techno by 2:30 and then properly hammered it out til about 4

He then played the scariest track ive ever heard and then followed it with a mixture of off beat, mellow and ambient tracks for the next 3 hours, including mathew jonson - marionette and ricardo villalobos - emfants, which he each played twice

most of the crowd left during this time. we were wondering what was going on, but decided to stay

when there were about 100 people left, he started to build it up again and dropped an amazing trance track at about 7am - everyone went nuts!! im sure that it sounded like a remix of mongoose but i could be completely wrong - id love to know what it was though

it ended up like a sven vath lock in - his own private party. he was wearing his tshirt as a turban for half the night, and was even dancing in the crowd towards the end

it was quite funny towards the finish as the head security wanted the music turned off, but sven wasn't having any of it - i think they finally agreed that he could play 2 more tracks. His choices?

    Global Communication - 14:31
Ricado Villalobos - Emfants (for the third time)

a total of about 30 minutes, just to piss the security off, im sure. Laughing The guy kept trying to get into the booth to turn it off but sven wouldnt let him - he must have felt like an awful c*nt, the pantomine villain

around 6.30, someone in the crowd said "one more tune" during one of the ambient tracks.

sven's retort? he turned the music off and shouted "VON MORE HOUR!!" before raising the volume again"

I've no idea, but you get my drift, the big names don't fill big clubs with underground dance music fans who subscribe to resident advisor podcasts and the like they fill them with radio1/galaxy listeners who like to go out and listen to accessible radio friendly dance music and hear the tunes they heard on the latest clubbers bible/anthems/annual cd and fair play to them horses for courses

basically if your idea of being a dance music fan is buying the latest clubbers bible/anthems/annual cd every 6 months and listening to galaxy i'd say you fall into the casual commercial dance fan rather than dance music fanatic

there's nowt wrong with that but to me they're two very different markets/demographics so for people like us to really care what the radio 1/galaxy jocks are doing regarding mixing is fairly irrelevant I reckon

surely that award has to go to soulwax/2manydjs, nearly every kid I know at uni loves 2manydjs but only a handful of them go to any underground dance nights
