The Pentagon will invest up to 42 million dollars in aprogram that will monitor and influence social media websites, such as twitter.
The program has four specific goals:
    1. Detect, classify, measure and track the (a) formation, development and spread of ideas and concepts (memes), and (b) purposeful or deceptive messaging and misinformation.
    2. Recognize persuasion campaign structures and influence operations across social mediasites and communities.
    3. Identify participants and intent, and measure effects of persuasion campaigns.
    4. Counter messaging of detected adversary influence operations.

Government agencies have, from a very early stage in companies like Facebook and Google, been involved in providing information, back doors and other ways of mining data for intelligence use.

I've come to the conclusion that anything i do or say on any site, regardless of whether its password protected, has a private profile or friends list ..... can and may come back to bite me in the future. So with that, i just carry on regardless - nothing is private any more.

The US Military already has software that can simulate swarms of people on social media sites to fake public interest or discussion on various topics of conversation. It handles stuff like friends requesting, posting messages at specific times and dates and other things to essentially 'pretend' they are real people.
