is beeing called a brit as in things like "brits abroad" programmes etc ok ??

No because "paki" is used in racist context and found offensive to people. You do not know they are from pakistan because of their colour...its like called an english person a scot or welsh or something.

To understand why one is OK and not the other, then you have to appreciate the historical contexts in which they've been used - 'paki' is synonymous with racist abuse, however unfairly.

I can totally see your logic, and I absolutely think it is unfair to expect children to just appreciate that one is OK and one is not OK, as to do so required an insight into the history of the words.

However, I think for adults we need to understand that 'paki' has negative connoitations, and if we wish to avoid being labelled racist then 'person from Pakistan' is a safer option to use in such discussions (which I think it's important we have).

I still don't think the use of the word should be classed as racism! it should be how the word is used, the same goes for 'Brit'.

Whether or not the word itself has negative connoitations and a a history it still shouldn't make the user of this word a racist!!!!

Absolutely, by refusing to use 'Paki' then you imply that there's something wrong with being a 'Paki', and thus Pakistan! Bit of a Catch 22, but you have to be a bit pragmatic about it and I think the safest option is to not use it at all really rather than make a stand against racists by using it in non-racist contexts.

I've said Paki all my life and I use to it describe someone from Pakistan. I hate saying 'Asian', I wouldn't like to be called a European all the time.
